AMDAHL ARTICLES
**************************************************************
96.
** AMDAHL LOOSES $6.9M '92
(EN, 1/25/93, pg. 6)
For the year, Amdahl reported a loss of $6.9 million, compared to a profit of
$10.6 million for 1991. Amdahl has been hit hard be recent declines in demand
for its mainframe computers and storage devices. The company has also been
damaged by delays in the introduction of the high price 6995 mainframe and
DASD storage products, as well as component quality problems with some of
its new mainframes.
97.
** DATA TOPICS
(EN, 1/25/93, pg. 17)
Amdahl has started moving to hire a range of engineers to work on the
Sparc-based Unix multiprocessor that the company is planning for
introduction either late this year or in early 1994. The proposed Sparc
machine has been described by Amdahl as similar in concept to the
Sparccenter 2000 server recently introduced by Sun, which, over time is
supposed to scale up to 20 processors.

AT&T ARTICLES
**************************************************************
98.
** AT&T PROFITS HIT $1B MARK IN Q4; RESULTS MAKE 1992
'BANNER YEAR'
(EN, 2/1/93, pg. 7)
Net income for all of 1992 was $3.8 billion, or $2.86 per share, on revenues of
$64.9 billion. Net income for 1991 was $522 million. The telecommunications
network switching business led the list of AT&T units with big improvements.

DIGITAL ARTICLES

99.
** DEC STILL WAFFLES ON FULL 64-BIT PORT FOR OPEN VMS
TO LEVERAGE ALPHA AXP
(EN, 2/1/93, pg. 1)
DEC is undecided on whether to implement a full 64-bit port of the Open VMS
operating system for use on its Alpha AXP line of RISC systems - a task which
would be required to take advantage of the extra address space. Not making the
leap could hinder Alpha's ability to handle large applications.
100.
** DEC FAULT-TOLERANT LINE IN THE AIR
(EN, 1/25/93, pg. 17)
Even if a business unit is interested in having further fault-tolerant hardware,
the potential exists for DEC to look outside for either a supplier or a joint
development partner rather than do the work itself. The fault-tolerant VAXft
810 is scheduled to go into field test in the next month and should be ready
for shipment late this quarter. There are no plans to support either OSF/1 or
Windows NT.
101.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 2/1/93, pg. 8)
DEC says it intends delivering Open Software Foundation Distributed
Computing Environment on its Open VMS AXP platform later this year.
Last week it put out a DCE Developers' Kit for Open VMS on VAX
platforms.
102.
** DEC STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS
(CW, 2/1/93, pg. 2)
The following DEC products are under consideration for retirement: DECTrillis
- object-oriented development environment; TeamData - Database tool;
DECimage storage manager - Stores images; Browser for Windows an DOS -
Data access tool; PathworksLinks - Provides hypertext linking in Pathworks;
Mobilizer for DOS - Electronic-mail access utility; Vivace - Desktop
application; DECreport - Report writer.
[Editors note: If your competing with DEC, ask your prospect for DEC's
list of fifty products under consideration for retirement.]

HP ARTICLES
**************************************************************
103.
** HP OUSTS DEC
(MS, 1/26/93, pg. 13)
According to InfoCorp, long-time No. 2 player DEC has been ousted by HP.
HP has done an exceptional job in the market for the last couple of years and
managed to rack up a five year compounded annual growth rate in excess of 44
percent - both in revenue and unit - while the marketwide average only
increased 20 percent. HP will continue to gain market share because there are
fewer payers. HP seems to be one step ahead in the ball game. DEC has had a
tough time because of the Alpha deterrence and customer uncertainty due to
management changes and ongoing restructuring.
104.
** HP FOCUS - HP BEEFS UP MIDDLEWARE LINE - PRODUCT
OFFERS USERS HELP WITH DISTRIBUTED APPS IN ENTERPRISE
ENVIRONMENTS
(OST, 2/1/93, pg. HP6)
Users need software that isolates programmers from networking chores and the
dependencies of one computer. That's where a new set of software products,
dubbed middleware, comes in to help programmers perform that task. HP hopes
to stake out a lead position in middleware, with technology built on the Open
Software Foundation's (OSF) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE).
105.
** HP TO MOVE OUT FRONT WITH NEW X TERMINALS
(OST, 2/1/93, pg. 37)
HP recently announced 17- and 15-inch X terminals, putting the company a
step ahead of competitors. Network Computing Devices and Tektronix do not
offer 15-inch color X terminals. The X terminals can be hosted by HP, IBM,
and Sun workstations and servers, and by SCO Unix systems.
106.
** HP'S OPEN VIEW GATHERING SUPPORT
(CW, 2/1/93, pg. 8)
HP plans by late this year or early 1994 to release an "open database schema"
that it will encourage other network management vendors to support. Initial
support for the database will come from the Premier Partners, four companies
that committed last fall to integrating their network management products with
OpenView on a deeper level than the average Simple Network Management
Protocol link. HP's database will enable the partners' applications to pass data
back and forth so that alerts collected across DEC, IBM and Novell networks
can generate alerts via HP Event software.

IBM ARTICLES
**************************************************************
107.
** DISTANCE FROM IBM HELPS ADSTAR
(CW, 2/1/93, pg. 59)
IBM's storage systems business, Adstar, is well-positioned both financially and
technologically but it will have to fight to keep its edge this year as it
becomes more independent from its parent company. IBM-wide cutbacks in R&D may
have some long-term negative effects on this extremely technology-dependent
business. A high-end RAID device is due by the first quarter of 1994.
108.
** OVERHAUL FOR RS/6000 NEW PRODUCTS RETURN IBM TO THICK
OF THE WORKSTATION RACE
(OST, 2/1/93, pg. 1)
IBM has announced more than a dozen new products, including a $4,000
workstation, an X terminal with industry leading performance and a parallel
processor. Products in several other categories include midrange workstation
and servers, graphics subsystems and a dedicated NFS filerserver.
[Editors note: Check the competitive hotline subject IBMRS2 for more
information on Monday 2/8/93.]
109.
** THE ANTENNA
(EN, 2/1/93, pg. 4)
Watch for IBM next week to jolt its mainframe business with multiprocessing
technology. On February 9, IBM is expected to announce parallel processor
based on System/390 architecture and an eight-way ES/9000 line. Executives
are also expected to detail the 390 machine's position alongside the RISC-based
parallel processors announced February 2.
110.
** IBM SEEKS CEO AMID WANING MAGNETISM OF BIG IRON
(EN, 2/1/93, pg. 1)
Last week's events at IBM provided another illustration of the traditional
mainframe's shift from center stage of the company as its board of directors
began a search to replace former large system salesman John Akers. Conjecture
about a successor revolved around several executives with mainframe
backgrounds, but some observers believe current ties to big iron and even the
long-held IBM sales credential could present a roadblock to ascension.
111.
** THE ANTENNA
(EN, 1/25/93, pg. 4)
Before leaving office former FAA Administrator Thomas Richards approved a
plan to break out development of new airport air traffic control systems from
the troubled IBM Advanced Automation System and seek competitive bids for a
new ARTS-4 program.
112.
** RS/6000 1993 WISH LIST
(RSM, 1/93, pg. 12)
The following suggestions for RS/6000 enhancements was provided by
a handful of RS/6000 users: Fewer releases of AIX with easier
installation/upgrades; An improved scheduler; Fix the lazy memory
allocation "feature" that makes AIX kill processes when paging space is
low; More memory options (less expensive, not having to throw away
SIMMs in order to reuse the board).
[Editors note: If your prospect is looking at an RS/6000, have them ask IBM
about the time schedule for these fixes.]
113.
** IBM CREDIT UNIT POSTS 9.5% GAIN IN ANNUAL PROFIT
(WSJ, 1/22/93, pg. B4)
IBM Credit Corp. said earnings for 1992 were $219.3 million, up form $200.2
million in 1991. Return on average equity was a healthy 19%, down slightly
from 20.3% in 1991. Reflecting its parent's hard times, IBM Credit's 1992
volume of new financing dropped sharply to $8.6 billion, down 6.5% form $9.2
billion in 1991.

114.
** DATA TOPICS
(EN, 2//1/93, pg. 17)
A remnant of the Advanced Computing Environment(ACE) initiative known as
the MIPS ABI group is planning to go public Feb. 16 with a specification that's
supposed to allow application software to run without changes to any
conforming hardware. The group consisting of Silicon Graphics, Tandem
Computers, Pyramid Technology and eight other makers of MIPS-based
systems, is hoping the spec. will make the SGI-owned architecture more
attractive to both software developers and end users.
115.
** SGI TAKES PC STRATEGY TO SUPER COMPUTER MARKETS
(EN, 2/1/93, pg. 17)
SGI unveiled a complete enterprise line of technical systems topped off by the
new Power Challenge series priced from $120,000 and rated for throughput of
up to 5.4Gflops. The line won't ship until the first half of 1994. The company
is now working to have a 1Gflop desktop computer available by 1996.
**************************************************************
SUN ARTICLES
**************************************************************
116.
** SUN PROFITS SHRINK 27% IN Q2
(EN, 2/1/93, pg. 7)
For the quarter, Sun reported revenues of $1.05 billion. However, net income
shrank to $34.3 million, a decline of more than 27 percent. Sun blamed the
lower earnings on delays in the volume shipment of its Sparcstation 10 Model
41.
117.
** FOLLOWS HP WITH PREDATORY TRADE-IN PROGRAM
(UNX, 2/1/93, pg. 5)
Sun responded to HP's trade-in program with up to 40% trade-in credits for
people moving to the new Sparcstation 10/Model 30, where HP is offering a
maximum 30%. HP, IBM, DEC and Silicon Graphics kit are targeted.
[Editors note: Check the Competitive Watch, January 28, for further details and
tips and techniques on selling against Sun.].

TANDEM ARTICLES
**************************************************************
118.
** TANDEM GAINS REVENUES IN Q1
(EN, 1/25/93, pg. 6)
For Q1FY93, reported revenues of $483.9 Million and net income of
$17.5 million, compared to $454 million and a loss of $94.6 million a
year earlier. The company cited a successful cost-control effort as well
as demand for the company's UNIX software division and RAID storage
subsidiary.

WANG ARTICLES
**************************************************************
119.
** WANG SEEKS TO SELL HEADQUARTERS
(CW, 2/1/93, pg. 2)
Wang Laboratories, Inc. late last week said it is seeking a buyer for its
Lowell, Mass. headquarters. Smaller offices in the area are being sought to
accommodate a work force that is expected to shrink below the 8,000 threshold
targeted last summer.

** BIG TICKET BUYS: DIALING FOR VAXS
(CC, 2/93, pg. 23)
By 1995, a startling 60 percent of DEC's US, sales will be made over the
telephone. DEC currently sells 100,000 different products by phone or modem
- sales in fiscal 1991 totaled $1 billion or 20% of its total US. sales. Sun
Microsystems' SunExpress is trying to entice customers with same-day
shipping, 30-day return policies, and low prices. Even IBM sells its RS/6000
workstation line over the phone, as will as its more expensive AS/400. HP lets
phone customers try any HP software package for 60 days.
121.
** CAD/CAM SYSTEM MARKET GROWS 10.5%
(UNX, 2/1/93, pg. 2)
The value of computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing, computer-
aided engineering and geographic information systems shipped last year grew
10.5 percent. Growth percent by vendor: IBM, 8%; Autodesk, 26.5%;
Cadence, 90.1%; Intergraph, 11.1%; Computervision, -5.4%.
